Working for Safe Roads
There was a dairy farmer, union member, catholic priest, and cop walking the halls of the Wisconsin Capitol… It sounds like the start of a joke, but the group was united along with hundreds of others at the State Capitol, to create safe roads through alternative Drivers Card Certificates. The proposal was included in the Assembly’s budget, but was stripped out in the budget passed by the Wisconsin Senate. The fate of the proposal is now in the hands of the Budget Conference Committee.
For $28 undocumented immigrants, and legal immigrants who can't provide proof of their legal status, could purchase a two-year driver card after meeting the requirements for driving skills, eyesight and knowledge of the rules of the road. The card could not be used as an official ID for boarding airplanes, but police would not be allowed to inquire into the immigration status of a cardholder solely because the driver has a driver card, not a license.
When people in Wisconsin are unable to obtain a license, they continue to drive, but many never study the rules of the road. To make things worse, without a driver’s license, people are unable to purchase insurance in case of a wreck. That is why we need alternative Drivers Cards that ensure safe roads by testing all drivers and creating eligibility for car insurance.
